Double leg amputee gets functioning mermaid tail to help her swim
“Auckland-born Nadia Vessey is a double leg amputee who lost her legs at a young age due to a medical condition. While removing her prosthetic limbs at a beach a few summers ago, a small boy asked her a series of “why” questions about her legs. Vessey responded with the explanation that she was a mermaid, just like the film ‘The Little Mermaid’. The boy ran off to tell his dad, but the idea stuck with her. She decided to email Weta and see if they could help build her a real, functioning mermaid tail to help her swim. Weta rose to the occasion…”
